Technical Support Frequently Asked Questions
Tip! You can use the search box for quick results.
1.) What is Auto-SIM Pin Entry control and what is it used for? If the SIM is in a PIN locked state, this feature will automatically enter the required PIN on power up when requested by the SIM.
2.) What is the size of the keep alive ping and what is the high/low setting for the how often it will ping? Eight (8) byte payload, 28 bytes total packet size. Min ping time is 1 min, max 500,000 minutes.
3.) If you enable the firewall, what is the criteria for the information that is passed vs. blocked? It is a fully featured SPI (stateful packet inspection) firewall that will basically block any incoming IP traffic that was not part of an IP connection originated from the SX7 side. You can arrange it for special applications (i.e. port forwarding, DMZ, Filtering). But by default it will block all unknown incoming IP traffic. This is very similar in features and function to how a wired SOHO firewall router works.
4.) The message LED is illuminated. How do I check my messages
Message LED is only for Voice Mail. You can dial your voice mail number to check your messages.
5.) Are drivers required when using a PC connected via the RJ45 or one of the USB ports? A driver is not required when using the Ethernet port (RJ45). A modem driver is required for the USB over DUN (Dial Up Networking) which is supplied with the CD from Telular.
6.) For the SX7 products what computer operating systems are supported (i.e. Windows, Mac, Unix)? The Ethernet (RJ45) will work on any OS that supports TCP/IP and Ethernet. The USB modem driver works on Windows (Win2000, WinXP and Vista).
7.) When a computer is connected to the SX7T or SX7M is that data connection always active? If the data connection is configured from the Web Device Manager as always active, then packet data is always active.
8.) How long can a data connection stay active with usage using the SX7T and SX7M (i.e. Can a user expect to use the data connection for Internet connectivity for 8 uninterrupted hours)? This is network dependent, but according to internal field tests up to 10 days of continuous streaming over 39GB without interruption has been validated. Additionally, the SX7 features “Ping Keep Alive” which detects data connectivity issues and reconnects automatically.
9.) What is DTMF Blanking & when is it used? "DTMF blanking" refers to removing (blanking) the DTMF generated by the local POTS and then regenerating it over the network.
10.) What is Metering Pulse Gain and when is it used? Metering pulses are 16Khz or 12Khz pulses detected by some POTS (mostly European) that are used for call cost display. The gain may need adjustment depending on the POTS used.
11.) How far can my telephone be positioned from the FWT?
The maximum length of RJ-11 telephone cable is 5000 feet.
12.) How close can I place two FWTs together? Within one inch apart.
13.) What is the recommended distance between the FWT and the telephone?
For best results, the RJ-11 phone cable should be a minimum of 9 inches from the FWT antenna. The RJ-11 telephone cable should not come into contact with the FWT antenna.
14.) How close can I place two antennas together? One meter or about 3 feet.
15.) Can I connect more than one FWT to one external antenna? Yes. We offer a couple of optional antenna combiners that connects up to four FWTs to one antenna. There is also a rack shelf that can combine 8 terminals to one antenna.
16.) What kind of external antenna can be used with the unit?
Antennas rated for 50-ohm impedance, with TNC connector and proper frequency.
17.) Can these units be used with a PABX or KSU? Yes. Telular FWTs supply analog loop start tip and ring.
18.) Can these units be used with a Fax machine? Yes, depending upon model and your network.
19.) Can I "surf" the Internet using an SX5 Telular FWT?
Telular's Phonecell® SX5 GSM/GPRS family of fixed wireless products allows you to surf the Internet at speeds up to 85.6 Kbps (data speeds are subject to network availability.) If internet capabilities are needed we would recommend the SX7 Telular products.
20.) What data speeds can I expect from the SX5 FWTs? Telular's SX5 GSM products provide packet data speeds up to 85.6 Kbps (data speeds are subject to network availability.)
21.) How many telephones can I connect to the unit at once? Five. (5 Ringer Equivalency Number)
22.) What should I do if I experience problems with my FWT? Contact your regional Telular office for all technical support concerns. See the Contact Telular section of this web site for contact information or fill out the RMA request form.
23.) Will programmed settings be lost if FWT power is turned off? No. Programmed parameters are stored in non-volatile memory.
24.) How do I program my FWT? Much of the programming is dictated by the service provider. The user is able to program many features and functions by consulting the Users Manual and utilizing a POTS telephone or a computer connected to the FWT.
25.) What options do we offer in areas in areas where signal strength is weak? Higher gain antennas are available as well as amplifiers
26.) Where should I install my FWT for best cellular reception? The FWT should be placed at a point of best signal strength, typically near a window or on an outside wall. For external antenna installations, mount the FWT as close to the antenna as possible.
27.) What type of environment is the terminal suited for? Consult the data sheet for operating temperatures.
28.) How much air space should be maintained around the terminal? Cooling vents and fins should not be blocked.
29.) What power supply should I use with my FWT? Use only Telular approved power supplies.
30.) Will my FWT operate on batteries? All Telular FWTs have battery backup capability. Optional equipment may be necessary.
31.) What do the LED indicators signify on the terminals?
Refer to the user manual for your model or contact Telular Technical Support.
